The beginning of this year has been intense; lots of new people have moved in, we all have been getting to know each other at least a little bit, and we have had a taste of life at the Bergh. As most of us have already realized and some are soon to learn; dorm-time is a lot of the time. Be it when we wake-up, when we are getting ready for sports, after supper, after study, or just during free time, the dorms are a bustling place that much time is spent in.
For some, adjusting to life in the dorms is daunting: living away from your parents for the first time, moving into a brand new environment, learning new rules, meeting new people, and most importantly, getting to know your roommates.
You will be living with your room-mate(s) for the next few months so it’s best to make it as enjoyable as possible. After making friends with your roommate, move on to the rest of your neighbours. You all live together and as we all know it’s not always easy. If you are struggling, listed below are some of the things that may help you get one step ahead of the game:
A. Be clean: shower, brush your teeth, and wash your clothes. No one wants to hang around someone who smells. B. Avoid talking behind people’s backs, they will find out eventually and you will have one more thing to deal with. C. Discuss your feelings about another students, staff, classes, and rules; they are hard to get used to.
Hopefully once you have done this and followed the guidelines you will have more friends. However, the experience you will have at Sedbergh will be majorly formed by the people you hang out with, so do your best to be yourself and to be open to new opinions, characters and experiences.
