The email database is a useful tool to keep in touch with your classmates. John W. Evans '51, joined Scott Griffin '56, John Dawson '51, Drew Armour '54, and Tony Vintcent '54, for lunch in Montreal on January 29th. John lives in St. John's, Newfoundland and is retired after 28 years of teaching at Memorial University. He has published any number of articles in biological studies and is currently doing research on how the Egyptians built charcoal kilns thousands of years ago. He has, in fact, a working lost wax process kiln on his property, which he has built himself and which is now used by a number of sculptors in the St. John's area. As he was during his student days, John continues to be vitally interested in all things in the natural habitat.

Bill McLaughlin '59, writes that he is currently in Australia and expects to be back in Canada in early March.

1960s

Eric Neill '65, who has lived in California for 31 years, writes that he and his partner are busy with their art business, listed as http://www.listedartist.com/ . They sell their paintings on eBay and their gallery is full of wonderful works of art. Eric has been recovering from complications resulting from a laser eye treatment which went wrong, requiring five surgeries to correct the problem. He reports that he is finally on the mend.

Caleb Davis '69, came up for the Canadian Ski Marathon weekend with students from The Dublin School, where he teaches. This is not the first occasion that Caleb has joined us. He and his students have often spent the night at Sedbergh sleeping on the Chapel-Great Hall floor before returning to the USA.

1970s

Eliot Frosst '70, has had an eventful year. He and Marie are now living permanently on Cape Breton, having moved from Calgary. Health problems dogged Eliot, but he has now finished his replacement teaching contract and is doing regular substitute teaching between Sydney and Neil's Harbour. Having bought a slice of land on the edge of the Bras d'Or Lake, they plan to build a new home there.

Mark Nowaczynski '75, won a National Film Board Gemini Award for his film, House Calls. Mark is featured in this month's Sedbergh Alumni Profile. Do check it out on our website.

Jock Ross '75, is now living in Canberra, Australia and working for the local government. He and his wife have a baby son. He is trying to contact classmates, among them Gilles Alix and Bill Roberts.


1980s

Mark Barber '81, is looking for a technical and mechanical person who has a background in electrics electronics, and mechanics for a challenging job in the Laurentians. Chris Prior '83, builds and manages a snowboard company in Whistler. He writes, "We have lots of snow out West. Skiing and boarding is as good as it gets! Business is going well, in all aspects. It's a great lifestyle."

Andrew Irving '86, is on the move again. He, Brenda and his two girls are now based in Toronto after having lived for 14 years on the West coast. " I'm searching out new clients for video coding and streaming as well as digital signage; if you know of any alumni who are involved in either of these areas, please let me know."

Peter Michaud '88, is President of Mightybids Auctions, one of the few competitors to eBay. His company is located in Montreal and Peter is looking for senior and intermediate .net programmers . " I would like to reach out to some of our old classmates to fill these positions." He writes. Peter's website is http://www.mightybids.com/

Richard Carpenter, GAP '88-‘89, found our website for the first time recently and tells us that he was here from the UK with Adrian Chalk, " I am now married and have two girls. We live just outside London, and, I work for a design agency in the City." Richard has been to Toronto several times, "but I have not yet made it up to Montebello. One day!"

1990s
Graduates from the 1990s have recently received a list of names of students from the 1990s for whom we no longer have valid email addresses. Please check over this list and see whether you can advise us of current email address for any of the names.

Dave Carrier '91, is still in Pintendre, QC working for the family auto company. He tells us that "things are great - not much change at our end!" But he does give us news that Christine Carrier '94, has recently had a baby girl, Rosalie!

Trevor Lewis '91, and his wife, Susan, have just returned to Hong Kong and Singapore after a visit home at Christmas time. Trevor had been in Korea for the last ten years working with an Australian investment bank.

Jorge Hernandez '92, writes from Mexico because every time he hears from us "it's like a wake-up call to my memory of one of the happiest times of my life." Married, and a father of triplets, he is working hard running his business and has photos of soccer matches he played at Sedbergh all over his office wall!

Owen Lewis '92, and Bronwyn are the proud parents of a baby girl, Meryn Jane, born last October. She is a sister to Spencer, now 3. Both Owen and Bronwyn work for GlaxoSmithKline, in Toronto.

Ryan Wilkinson '92, is on the second day of the Canadian Ski Marathon as this update is written. Ryan is attempting his Silver Coureur de Bois. He looks very fit and is in the final stages of a physiotherapy degree in Hamilton, Ontario. He hopes to see Renee Carriere '93 and her family on his way back to Hamilton.

Robert Carreau '93, writes from Truro, NS where he is on a sabbatical from his teaching job doing a MSc. at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. He and Lavinia have recently had their 4th child, Miles, and all is well with the family. Rob still runs as much as he can and he and Lavinia are hoping to enter some 800m and 1500 metre track races this summer.

Jesse Kantor '94, is currently in St. Jean sur Richelieu as a recruit instructor for the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School. He will soon be starting a new contract with a new regiment overseas.

Peggy Yu and William Mok ‘ 94, write from Hong Kong. Married after they left Sedbergh, Peggy and William comment, "We are doing fine. William is working for his family business in the garment industry. I have been working in an investment company until recently."

Mathieu Fortier '95, came to the Montreal annual dinner at the end of January. He is now part of the Montreal police riot squad, dealing with barricaded armed men and suicidal armed individuals. He and his group were at the Dawson CEGEP incident. As well, Mathieu has started a small business distributing various products to police, fire-fighters, and ambulance crews http://www.distributionprivilege.com/.

Patrick Paquette '95, is a father of two children, aged 8 and 2, and is working with his brother and father. He will soon be owner of the family plumbing and heating company.

Django-Mazars.gifDjango Mazars '95, writes from France where he and his partner, Marie Pierre, are currently looking for new adventures. They are just back from Madagascar and Malawi, where for a number of years, they have been working with NGOs doing humanitarian missions. Django, with his civil and water engineering background, was, in his last mission, in charge of a staff of over 35 people and responsible for setting up clean water points, building pit latrines, and improving sanitation levels in a number of villages. He and Marie Pierre are looking to find another project where they can put their skills to use for the benefits of places and people who need it.

Sarah MacRury '96, sends exciting news. She is about to go on maternity leave from her job as Assistant to the Director at the Nunavut Hospital. She and her partner, Michael, are expecting a baby in mid-March. "Very exciting and a little scary!" she writes. They are also planning to buy their first house - "the house that I grew up in here in Iqaluit, right on the beach." Sarah tells us that Allie, her sister, is graduating from Acadia and will be moving to Toronto to work on her Dietician internship.

Kenra Parris '97, has returned home to the Bahamas, after several years in the UK, where she took a law degree, and is now a barrister. " Island life is relaxing; I truly can't complain!" At home, Kenra is practicing in the Civil Litigation department.

Ben Pujol '97, contines to move around the world. " I graduated from Durham University (UK) last year with a law degree, but I am not yet ready to continue down that road. Too much travelling to be done! I have just returned from Thailand and am off to do a ski season in Val Thorens."

Ora Artzy '99, has been busy with her photography career. Her website http://www.oartzy.photostockplus.com/ is full of interesting work. She travels often but still manages to come to Sedbergh lunches in Montreal from time to time.

Dania Khan '99, writes from Long Island, New York. She is just finishing up her teaching degree at Long Island University and will be teaching children up to grade 8. She is in touch with Sharon Angnakak, '99 and Melissa Marcovitch '99 and had a surprise visit from Carola Sendra Planes, '99 who was on her way to Mexico from Spain but was delayed in New York by a snow storm.

Heather McGregor '99, writes that she is engaged to be married. The lucky man is Phil McComiskey and he's from Stouffville, Ontario. "Phil proposed to me at Christmas - it was a total surprise to me and the most special gift I have ever received" Heather and Phil met at Acadia four years ago. "We haven't setting a wedding date yet as I'm still working away at my Masters degree, but we're both very excited and look forward to starting our life together."

Nick Pharand '99, has moved. He is now living in Ottawa.

Aleck Snow '99, is a busy young man. He is currently doing an internship two days a week with "Canadian Art" magazine and is also working for the rest of the week at Art Metropole in Toronto.

2000s

Andrew Martin '00, announces that he and his partner, Casey, had a baby girl who they have named Lily, 6 November 2006. Andrew's Dad, Ralph Martin, past Chairman of the Board of Trustees, took the photo!

Brodie Smith '00, was hoping to join us for the Old Sedberghians hockey game , " but it is little bit difficult as I'm currently "down under!". Brodie usually hails from Toronto and is still deeply involved with music.

Christine Walker '00, writes that she is in her last semester of nursing in Peterborough. " I am following a nurse and have been placed in the operating room - and I am absolutely loving it! As a result of the long hours, I cannot miss a day to come to the dinner."

Bryce Sorensen '01, visited recently. He is still at university, and he is thinking of a career in medicine.

Jenelle Bourgeois '01, is applying to Palmer College of Chiropractic Medicine, in Davenport, Iowa. Her acceptance depends "on my grades from my last semester at the U of O, so I won't be able to join you for the Montreal dinner." Jenelle stopped at Sedbergh for a moment in January - "just long enough to see the new student centre. I am soooo jealous!"

Hannah Sanderson, GAP '02, is back in Oxford, UK, working part time for Oxfam and still planning to come out to Canada. "It's been far too long."

Simone Unmussig, GAP ‘02, writes from Germany where she is still studying at university in the creative field of fashion. "There is a lot of inner motivation for my work at the moment, and I am keeping myself healthy and loving life." Eleni Corbeil '03, has been visiting Simone and Hubert Despres ‘05 is hoping to see her while he is in travelling in Europe, after several months volunteering with a NGO in Burundi.

Mike Denhart, GAP '04-'05, writes from Spain where he is based for the academic year. "I am teaching English in a language school to anybody from age 14 to 60, in a town near Badajoz, close to the Portuguese border. It is a really exciting challenge as I have only recently started Spanish at university. I have been dubbed ‘el ingles' by the hiking club which I have just joined." After his Spanish sojourn, Mike goes to France to act as a receptionist in a Youth Hostel in Aix, near Lyons. "Back to university after that. I graduate in 2008".

Past Staff

Danielle Despres, Nurse 1997-2004, has just returned to Canada to her nursing job at the emergency department of the CLSC in St. Andre after a three month job in Burundi, working in a hospital maternity ward there. She enjoyed that work immensely and plans to return to Burundi on a regular basis.

Terry Guest, Headmaster 1985-1988, was awarded a CVO ( Commander of the Royal Victorian Order ) in the United Kingdom's New Year's Honours List announced recently. This award was in recognition for his work with Round Square and the thousands of students impacted by it.

Duncan and Janet Hossack , Headmaster 1990 -1994, are now happily settled in Boca Raton, Florida, where Duncan is Principal of the Lower Day school of St. Andrew's School. Janet volunteers with exceptional students at the school, and they both are enjoying stomping around the Everglades and, of course, the beach. They were in Canada at Christmas and had a visit from Philippa Cochran, GAP '91 when she was touring around North America.

Eliane Larocque, Staff 1996-2006, resigned from Sedbergh recently after ten years working in a number of areas at the school. Parents and students will remember the care she always took with their concerns. She is currently working for the Lauzon companies near Papineauville.

Martin and Martha Lewis, Staff 1989-1992, live north of Toronto and now that they have both retired, they have more time to travel. Recently, they were in Florida, and they both still bicycle whenever and wherever they can. In a recent note, they gave us the sad news of the recent death of Enid Petten, mother of Nick and Amanda Petten, students here in the early 1990s. Enid, a compassionate and gracious lady, had helped out in our school library while her husband, Alvard, was Manager at the Chateau Montebello. We send them our heartfelt condolences.

Peter Milner, Staff 1980, visits frequently and was in the Valley during the Marathon. He and his wife, Elizabeth, are great friends of Pat and Sara Pettigrew and always make a point of visiting the Valley whenever they come this way. After leaving Sedbergh, Peter and Elizabeth taught at Rosseau Lake for many years. Now retired, they live in Bracebridge, ON.

Cheryl Russell (Gleig), Staff 2000s, has recently had a baby boy, Fraser James, brother to Anna! Cheryl and husband, Bruce, live in Canmore, Alberta and always look forward to visits from Old Sedberghians and staff of their era!

Sanne van der Ros, Staff 2000s, is enjoying life in Golden, BC. She is a supply teacher and "I have got myself involved in the local search and rescue group, the volunteer ski patrol, and a few hockey groups. For work I will be coordinating a Canadian Cancer Society event in the spring called the Relay for Life". Sanne goes on to say that " the people here are very open, non-assuming, and friendly - and the mountains and the snow are amazing!" Share Link:
