Athletics

Sedbergh is an outstanding setting for our compulsory, year-round athletics programs. In addition to those activities that take place in the 'valley', our new gymnasium enables students to participate in indoor sports including squash, volleyball, basketball and badminton.

Sedbergh's athletics program rewcards those students who challenge themselves by participating in a wide variety of sports. Our wide range of activities varies with the seasons and include traditional and pursuit sports. Students select two options, one for Monday and Thursday and the second for Tuesday and Friday. Those students who are members of a school team will usually have games and competitions on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Each pursuit sports has its own curriculum of technical skill development and associated awards system. These awards are connected to the broader Sedbergh Awards which incorporated all outdoor education components: huts, expeditions, academics and special events. The five sports currently incorporated in the Sedbergh Awards system are mountain biking, rock-climbing, canoeing (flat-water and white-water), kayaking (flat-water and white-water) and cross-country skiing.

Team Sports
As a small school with fewer than 100 students, Sedbergh is only able to offer one team sport per season. In the fall, students can choice to join either the Bantam or Senior soccer teams. Members practive twice per week and play against local schools. During the winter, student can join the cross-country ski team and participate in ski meets across Quebec and Ontario. The spring provides rugby opportunities for both boys and girls. Rugby is very popular at Sedbergh and attracts a large number of students. Rugby players practice twice per week and compete with teams from Quebec and Ontario. When feasible, Sedbergh's rugby teams participate in the CAIS annual tournament. Sedbergh also hosts an invitational rugby tournament comprising six teams from the Ottawa and Montreal areas.

Seds and Berghs Intramurals
As a long-standing tradition at Sedbergh, students are divided into two teams, Seds and Berghs. The intramural team competition concludes at the end of the school year where at Closing Ceremonies, the Webster Trophy is awarding to the team with the most points.

Students remain on their respective teams once they have been assigned as a new student and until they graduate. Points are not only awarded to team sports but also for individual achievement in academics and sports. Although teams participate in tradition sports including hockey, rugby and soccer, they also participate in those sports unique to Sedbergh, Home Run, Point to Point, Push, Tri-ball and the Johannsen Ski Meet.

Competition between Seds and Berghs promotes school spirit and a healthy rivalry among students.
